In the past few years, Nixon’s former defense lawyer, Geoff Shepard, has also shattered the myth of legal and judicial righteousness, another edifice in the post-Watergate consensus. Rightly described by the Wall Street Journal as “the main architect of modern Watergate revisionism,” Shepard exposed the scale of prosecutorial misconduct by the Watergate Special Prosecution Force. They were hunting for Nixon’s scalp, breaking the rules to do so. The trial judge overseeing their case, John Sirica, met secretly with the prosecutors to lay out their plan.
